What makes a better holiday gift for a kid than a new $70 kart racing video game? A wholly free but great kart racer with no strings attached. Does that sound too good to be true, or bad enough to be from a '90s infomercial? Well, you might be correct on that last part, but the fact still stands that the new Fortnite Rocket Racing mode is entirely free, and on top of that, it's pretty great, too. "But that's not all, folks!"
Rocket Racing is a brand new, fresh-from-the-oven free mode for Fortnite. It just came out on December 8, a day after LEGO Fortnite, but a day before Fortnite Festival. Don't worry; we're getting into those as well.

To play Rocket Racing, you don't need to do anything special aside from downloading Fortnite. Once you're logged in, you'll see the new tiles in the main menu where the character is. If you can't find it, look for the "By Epic" section.

Rocket Racing is made by Psyonix, the developers behind the world-famous Rocket League. But here, instead of wanting to throw your controller through the TV because of the difficulty, you'll be Mario Karting away to your heart's content.

It's an easy-to-learn, hard-to-master type of experience, which makes it perfect for all ages. You can even go ahead and play with your youngling and have a blast together.

The rules are pretty simple. Drive, drift, fly, turbo, and air dodge your way to the finish line. Just like with every kart racer, when you drift, you gain turbo, which makes you go faster.

And yes, you can also use your newly learned skills to take out your opponents in satisfying ways. So, if you want to save a buck this way, then there's no better way of doing so.

The fun doesn't stop here because LEGO Fortnite is also part of the game now. In short, it's Minecraft with amazing-looking graphics. If your gaming device is connected to an OLED TV, then stand back and watch the dopamine-inducing candy colors fill your retinas. I'm not kidding; the lighting and colors are gorgeous in the LEGO mode.

Also, it's very forgiving. When you play, you will get asked what type of world you want to create. If you choose Survival, then your characters will have status effects to worry about, like hunger, coldness, etc.

Also, there are some enemies like LEGO spiders and wolves chasing you down. If you go for the other type, then the world is your oyster. You can take as long as you like because nothing is pressuring you. This is great for the younger folk still discovering gaming.

Lastly, you have Fortnite Festival on December 9, a Guitar Hero or Rock Band type of experience where you have to press the correct buttons to match the rhythm on the screen.

Pair these three together with the classic Fortnite experience, and you have one immense package to enjoy, which doesn't cost you a penny. Now, the skins and Battle Passes, however... are an entirely different story.

You don't need to get them because they don't offer any gameplay advantages. But every so often, you might hear how they need the latest Peely skin from the banana character and whatnot.

Oh, and Fortnite is virtually available everywhere: mobile phones, tablets, Switch, last-generation consoles, current-gen consoles, PCs... you name it.
