Dealers Indicted for Odometer Tampering

Two Cheyenne, Wyoming dealers have been indicted by a local federal grand jury for several fraud-related offenses, while working for Lee RV's dealership in Cheyenne. The two are being charged with odometer tampering, title fraud, securities fraud, mail fraud and conspiracy to commit these offenses.

In a world where everybody is chasing low prices for their future vehicles, Randy Lee and Jay Lee though best to take advantages of these customer needs. The two bought used motor vehicles from various businesses in New Mexico and Wyoming.

They then did what the usual suspects do: altered the motor vehicle titles and sales documentation, as well as the odometers. This meant that whoever bought a car from the two found their new-used car was not what they bargained for.

We at autoevolution not often report such cases, but it would appear the US is determined not to allow any tampering with a car to unlawfully increase its value. Very determined.

So, Tony West, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division of the Department of Justice worked with the Wyoming Department of Transportation, the US Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the US Attorney's Office in Wyoming in investigating the case.

To end it, what took the Lees several minutes to do, will now take them years to undo. For a little tweak here and there, the two Lees now face up to 20 years in prison, if proven guilty and convicted.

"That sort of practice leaves consumers in the dark about the real mileage of the vehicle. The purpose of the law is to provide accurate information, and the exception in the statute for vehicles with unknown mileage does not create a loophole for unscrupulous dealers who roll back odometers and conceal the true mileage," Kelly Rankin, US Attorney for the District of Wyoming said in a release.
