BMW said loud and clear the Z4 wouldn’t be available as a full-on M car, but the aftermarket is much obliged to take up the challenge of turning the M40i into such a machine. Dahler from Switzerland is one of those tuners, promising up to 440 PS (435 horsepower) from a Stage 2 re-flash of the engine control unit.
Add 640 Nm (472 pound-feet) to the menu, and you’re all set! The Stage 1 upgrade, on the other hand, features 408 PS (402 horsepower) and 620 Nm (457 pound-feet) and homologations for both the European Union and Switzerland. But the go-faster treatment doesn’t end here, oh no!

As part of the Dahler Competition Line, the Z4 M40i can be improved with a stainless-steel exhaust system that includes four tailpipes and a silencer at the rear. Coil-over suspension adjustable for height and hardness, ultralight 20- and 21-inch forged wheels, Michelin performance tires, and a front spoiler lip are also available for the soft-top roadster.

Under the promise of “coming soon," Dahler plans to launch a clubsport coil-over suspension upgrade, DDC (dynamic damping control) plug-and-play module, and a glass deflector made from tempered safety glass. In other words, Dahler’s boffins believe that demand for aftermarket parts will eventually take off even though the Z4 M40i is not that big of a sales success.

Sports cars and especially roadster are not as popular as they used to be in the early 2000s and 1990s, and looking at the European figures for the Z4, the trend is all too obvious. From a peak of 22,973 examples of the breed in 2003, BMW only managed to sell 3,006, 244, and 125 units of the Z4 in the past three years in Europe. With that kind of volume, does it come as a surprise Magna Steyr builds the damn thing in Austria instead of BMW in Germany?

If you were wondering, the Z4 M40i starts at 63,750 euros in Germany while the U.S. model kicks off at $63,700 before destination charge.
