Renault’s low-cost Romanian brand Dacia may remain absent for a while longer on the Australian market. Several issues stands between Dacia and it’s cars being sold on the Aussie market.
Although Dacia is making right-handed versions of models like the Duster and Sandero (Logan MCV coming soon) for the UK market, the Romanian budget cars were mostly intended for European clients. Shipping prices and import taxes will affect Dacia’s affordability reputation, thus making it a non-viable solution for the Australian customers.
Considering that Romanian and Australia are worlds apart, few Australians are likely to have heard of the Dacia brand. As such, the launch of the relatively unknown brand would be costly and difficult. The quickest solution would be to sell the Sandero, Logan or Duster under the Renault badge
“Once we get all Renault things right then maybe we can look at it, but we will be in a much better position then to see what’s the right way to go about it.” said Justin Hovacer, the Director of Renault Australia.
Other issues in satisfying Aussie clients are the fact that Dacia models are not equipped with automatic transmissions and are a little low-powered for the Australian Outback. The various Dacia models come with a choice of petrol and turbo-diesel engines of small displacement, starting from just 0.9 liters.
