Taking inspiration from high quality tailored suits, cars such as the Corvette Stingray, Cadillac ELR, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are fitted with custom-made fabric covers before they leave the factory, replacing the plastic wrap common to vehicle shipping.
The new hand-made protective covers are manufactured by General Motors in collaboration with CoverCar, a unit of Italy-based confections company Confezioni Andrea. CoverCar set up operations in southeast Michigan last year in order to work closely with GM, visiting assembly plants to custom-fit covers for the Corvette, ELR and GM’s redesigned lineup of full-size trucks.
Unlike the plastic wrap of yesterday, the new design is easier to install and remove, more stylish and offers increased protection from those fine scratches usually occurring when handling and shipping factory-fresh automobiles.
Just like a tailor crafts a fine suit, the custom covers are adorned with markings, indicating where the tailor needs to tuck, trim, pin or cut the fabric to ensure the vehicle would remain protected for its trip from the factory to the dealership.
In addition to the domestic Corvettes and ELRs, export-bound full-size pickups and utilities, other models including the Chevrolet Malibu sedan, Volt and Vauxhall/Opel Ampera extended-range electric vehicles will soon benefit from the custom-fit car covers.
“The best solution is to custom-fit the covers for each model to ensure they stay factory fresh during a lengthy journey that spans weeks and includes time at port and on a ship,” said Noel Hunt, GM manager of international quality. “These covers address an important part of the customer experience, ensuring that vehicles delivered thousands of miles away appear as though they just rolled off the assembly line.”
