Coulthard Reckons He Quit at the Right Time

David Coulthard did stop from racing in Formula One at the right time, as insisted upon in a recent interview with British broadcaster BBC. The Scot wanted to clear that up after previously hinting – as interpreted by the media, however – that he may have left the Great Circle a little too soon.

The former Red Bull driver is now consultant for the Milton Keynes based team and also F1 commentator for BBC. Hu insisted he is happy with what he's doing now and admitted his leaving the team only made them stronger for the 2009 season. Hadn't it been for his retirement, the Vettel-Webber duo wouldn't have happened (yet) at Red Bull.

I questioned whether I still had the energy to do that (recover and come back and deliver each time). As it happens, the way the regulations changed I almost certainly would have had the energy to handle a season,” were the phrases that started the whole thing, as delivered by DC to the Daily Record last month.

This week, however, he made it very clear that he wouldn't have lasted another year in the business, despite the massive improvement of the RB5 for 2009.

I was misquoted recently saying I'd stopped a year too early. I never said that. What I said was I'm happy with the opportunities I had in F1. You have to recognise when your time has come, and my time had come,” said DC, while also reckoning that he can't imagine himself out of the motorsport in the future, in one way or the other.

One thing that is very clear is that motorsport is something I have always derived pleasure from, first as a fan, then as a racer and now from the TV side of things. It remains to be seen whether I race something in the future, but I cannot imagine not having motorsport play a part in my life over the coming years,” added Coulthard.
