Coulthard: Only Alonso Can Save Ferrari!

According to former Red Bull driver and current BBC pundit David Coulthard, Ferrari's only way out of the development hole they dug themselves into this year would be the signing of double world champion Fernando Alonso. Known to be a driver close to Schumacher when it comes to developing a car and improve its performances through the year, Alonso's input would be lifesaving for the Scuderia.

Writing for The Daily Telegraph in his regular column, Coulthard revealed that former teammate Kimi Raikkonen is not the right man when it comes to the car's development. Apart from the speed he manages to take his Ferrari F60 on track, Raikkonen's help doesn't give the Scuderia mechanics a whole lot to work with.

I don't know Felipe Massa that well, so I can't really comment too much on him, but Raikkonen is a former teammate of mine and the Finn has never shown me he can lead a car's development. Sure, he has blistering natural speed, but I suspect Ferrari will improve dramatically if and when Fernando Alonso arrives,” wrote Coulthard.

He also expressed his disagreement concerning Raikkonen's exaggerated calm and relaxation ahead of this year's grands prix. As Coulthard argued, this would have never happened under the close supervision of former team boss Jean Todt. Which leads to another problem Ferrari are facing right now, in terms of team management.

Kimi Raikkonen would never have been wandering about the pits with a choc-ice and a coke, as he was in Malaysia when the race was still technically in session, had Todt still been in charge,” added Coulthard.

Before joining BBC as F1 pundit, the former RBR driver – and current reserve driver for the Milton Keynes based team – admitted he considered Fernando Alonso the best driver of last season, in a query conducted by British magazine Autosport. His main arguments were than the Spaniard turned the Renault R28 into a race-winning car through the course of a single F1 season.
