The British company today announced, via an official statement, that no agreement has been yet inked for the 2010 F1 season. According to a report issued by local newspaper the Northampton Chronicle, a Cosworth spokesman revealed: “All we can say is, we're unable to make a comment at this time.”
It is believed not only USF1 are ready to close a deal with Cosworth for the upcoming season, but also Formula One potential entries Prodrive, Lola or Epsilon Euskadi. The British company were recently granted the right to build low-cost Formula One power train packages by the FIA, but several conditions for the deal to go on were put in place.
Mainly, there would have to be a minimum number of teams to apply for a Cosworth package, that will include an engine based on the V8 produced for Team Williams F1 back in 2006, along with a standard gearbox.
Given the current dispute between the FIA and the FOTA representatives, there is a good chance that Formula One would remain without a single manufacturer in 2010. The current F1 carmakers inked a deal in Monaco more than 2 weeks ago, by which a potential break of ranks from one of the manufacturers will enforce the payment of $50 million to each of the other carmakers forming the FOTA. Under the circumstances, the FIA is forced either to accept them all in the 2010 entry list, or none.
The latter would more than likely lead to Cosworth becoming sole engine supplier in Formula One, although a final decision is to be taken by the FIA soon enough.
