The Japanese automaker is clearly on a roll this year. And among the countless novelties, there's also something great for GR86 fans – the two-tone Trueno Edition, a throwback to the AE86 sports car legend.
This year, Toyota opted for a tidal wave of new model introductions, facelifts, and special editions. We have seen heroes like the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid, the 2024 Grand Highlander, the 2024 Tacoma, and the 2024 Land Cruiser. We have also seen an entire Corolla Nightshade family, as well as the 2024 Corolla Circuit, 2024 GR Supra 45th Anniversary, and the GR86 Trueno, among many others.

That's genuinely nice – the company is thinking not only about top sales dogs like the Tacoma or Land Cruiser but also about the niche options in an effort to have something fresh for every dream and desire. As far as the GR86 is concerned, no wonder they came up with something cool as Subaru also introduced a new tS version for the 2024 model year in a bid to stand out in Mazda MX-5 Miata's small sports car crowd.

However, all these subtle enhancements from the real world pale compared to what the imaginative realm of digital car content creators has prepared for the nimble Toyota GR86. As such, meet Sean Demetros, the self-taught 3D virtual artist better known as demetr0s_designs on social media, who has a nasty Toyota GR86 idea that we quickly fell in love with – he created a Roadster version that could directly compete with the legendary Miata.

The fact that he wants the Toyota GR86 Roadster to compete with the MX-5 is quite obvious – his shout-out sounds like this: "Hey Mazda, watch out for the new kid on the block!" And the idea for this virtual project came when he was stuck in traffic and saw a Miata and GR86 side-by-side. "This sparked the question, why isn't there a roadster version of the 86? Most car reviewers compare the GR86 to the Miata anyways, so why not offer a version with the sky as your roof?"

Interestingly, if Porsche made this, the more appropriate term would be GR86 Spyder rather than trying to figure out a 'GR86 Roadster/ GRoadster86/GRVert' moniker, as the digital project doesn't seem to have a retractable roof behind the two pods. It looks great in light blue, indeed, but also because the pixel master opted to make the hypothetical GR86 Roadster slightly more comprehensive and a lot lower than OEM. Plus, the chromed aftermarket wheels with big lips also hint at the added width.

All in all, it's not a bad effort, so we conclude with the same words as the CGI expert: since Miatas get compared to GR86 and BRZ sports cars on a regular basis, why not make them convertible, too? After all, Mazda already sells the MX-5 RF as a closed-roof alternative, and it's not crazy expensive ($28k versus almost $36k) compared to its soft-top sibling.
