Confirmed: BMW Megacity to Be Built in Leipzig

After earlier today a report which surfaced in german media hinted to the possibility of BMW's Megacity vehicle to be built at the Leipzig plant, the German carmaker confirmed the news, as well as a substantial investment in a number of facilities in Bavaria to support the production of the future line of efficient (including electric) BMW vehicles.

As a result of the cooperation with SGL Carbon and SGL Automotive Fibers, the carbon fibre clutches intended for the vehicle will be produced in Wackersdorf and processed to CFRP components for the new vehicle at BMW Plant Landshut.

“The BMW Group will build the car of the future in Leipzig with high-tech innovations from Bavaria. The main reasons behind this decision are the qualities that Germany has to offer: we have a tried and tested production network here and high levels of education and outstanding competencies at our disposal,” Norbert Reithofer, BMW chairman said in the press statement confirming the decision.

As for the vehicle itself, BMW only confirmed the name of the project, Megacity Vehicle, and said it will be an innovative solution for sustainable mobility in urban environments. Also, the German carmaker also confirmed the vehicles built in Leipzig will form a BMW sub-brand of their own and will not be a BMW or a MINI.

The car's electric powertrain was already previewed in the ActivE, a vehicle powered by a new synchronous electric motor. The vehicle develops 170 bhp and a maximum torque of 250 Nm of torque from a standstill.
