The following video is not a Top Gear review. Some say it’s a middle finger salute to the BBC and the people that will keep the Top Gear torch alive by emasculating Jeremy Clarkson’s, Richard Hammond’s and James May’s way of reviewing cars. Other say that this 4-minute test is better than the 75-minute Top Gear finale. All we know is that it’s entertaining.
At the beginning of May, we were reporting that Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond showed up at the Thruxton circuit in Hampshire with the former Top Gear filming and production crew. A Chevrolet Corvette Z06 was shown in a cryptic tweet posted by Jeremy Clarkson, but now we know what’s what. In a nutshell, they were there to film a faux Top Gear review for the Clarkson, Hammond and May Live tour.
Without further ado, the three amigos are in the middle of the arena next to a knackered Reliant Robin, when the lads start to tease the audience by mocking TV shows about making cakes, playing golf, the honey badger, and the weather. Then, all of a sudden, this pops out of nowhere: “And yet there’s no program where somebody drives around the corner in a bright green Lamborghini in a cloud of tire smoke going Poweeeer!”
I know you’ve been waiting for this question to be posed, here goes: “Could it be possible for us three to make a car show and then put it on the television? Who here thinks that would be a good idea?” Well, guess what? The three stooges we all know and love did exactly that, outside BBC Top Gear land, by pitting a Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Mercedes-AMG GT S and Porsche 911 Turbo on the Thruxton circuit. We mentioned that the Top Gear production team and film crew put the following video together and it shows.
The intro song from The XX, the camera angles and filters, it all harks back to when these guys were motoring superstars on the television. But there’s a catch: all of them, Clarkson included, pretend to be amateur motoring journalists by calling the Porsche 911 “nine-nine-one-nine-one-one” and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG “ALS SLS.” It’s extremely entertaining to see the three amigos of Top Gear fame do their thing outside the BBC’s sphere of influence, which is why the spoilers end here. Enjoy the watch!
