A couple of days ago, I was browsing through the Citroen website looking for data on the DS3 facelift when I stumbled upon a very interesting car that's gone on sale. I'm talking about the E-MEHARI, easily the weirdest car offered by a French company.
Even though Citroen expects most of its customers to be businesses like hotel resorts, you can still grab one for yourself at the princely price of €25,000, about the same as a Grand C4 Picasso or two C3 superminis.
The E-MEHARI is an electric vehicle, as its name suggests, but the body is unlike anything else. The tiny passenger compartment is protected by two targa-style roof hoops and there are only two doors. It even looks like the steering wheel is a simple metal hood without an airbag in the middle.
Mind you, the E-MEHARI is the least likely car to be involved in a high-speed crash EVER. Although the maximum power rating is 50 kW, the rated power is just 35 kW or 47 horsepower. As unimpressive as the motor is, the battery pack is an awesome 30 kWh or the same as the latest 2016 Nissan Leaf update. Given that, the total range of 200 kilometers or 124 miles seems doable.
A full charge will take 8 hours on a 16A socket (at domestic/public stations such as Autolib in France), or 13 hours on a 10A socket that you have at home.
So what else can we tell you? Well, a megari is actually a fast running Arabian camel used by the French when they were colonizing North Africa. For those of us who don’t recall the “original” MEHARI introduced in the late 60s by the French automaker, and sold through 1988, you can check it out in the second video below.
The E-MEHARI is the second smallest vehicle sold by Citroen, ahead of the C3 and the C-Zero EV. It measures 3,810 mm (150 inches) in length, 1,650 mm (65 inches) in height, and 1,870 mm (74 inches) in width. What that looks when filled to the brim with hipsters and bearded people you can check out in the video below.
