Citroen’s little C-ZERO has become the first battery-powered car to use the Eurotunnel’s shuttle service, after it braved snow engulfed roads and sub-zero temperatures earlier this month.
The journey from London to Calais and back to Ashford in Kent covered a distance of 100 miles (160 km) and was undertaken by a team of reporters from the British Sunday Times. Nick Rufford and Jason Dawe drove the car through some of the worst British weather in the past 20 years. Despite freezing temperatures and thick snow, the C-ZERO passed mile upon mile of stationary traffic.
“Jason and I are delighted to be the first passengers through the tunnel in a production electric vehicle. The C-ZERO performed admirably, despite the terrible weather conditions, and we were still able to complete our story,” said Nick Rufford for The Sunday Times.
The first ever all-electric production car to use the Eurotunnel offers zero fuel consumption, zero CO2 emissions and zero engine noise. Despite its small proportions, the car has spacious and comfortable cabin with four real seats and a 166-litre boot. The top speed is rated at 80 mph (128 km/h), while the 0-62 mph acceleration takes 15.9 seconds. On a full charge of the battery, it offers up to 93 miles (150 km/h) of range. C-ZERO’s 9m turning circle and nimble handling also make it easy to navigate through city traffic.
The new Citroen C-ZERO is available to lease at £415 ($650) per month over 4 years/40,000 miles (including warranty, servicing and maintenance). First deliveries are scheduled to start early next year.
