Chrysler Sales, Up Outside US

Whereas in the domestic market American manufacturer Chrysler registered a very disconcerting 42 percent drop in sales, outside of its home country Chrysler is happy to report an overall increase of 30 percent for September, compared to last month.

Sure, this translate into only 12,493 vehicles sold outside North America, but still an increase from the 9,951 reported in August 2009. This is the up-side. The down-side is that compared to September 2008, sales are still down 32 percent, to be more precise.

Even so, Chrysler (and Fiat) has high hopes for its future... in Europe, at least. The western and central European countries accounted for nearly half of the vehicles sold outside North America, 5,440 units, a number which in itself represents a 90 percent increase compared to last month.

In Africa, Middle East, Eastern Europe and Russia, sales increased to 2,065 vehicles from 1,520 in August, meaning 36 percent up. For Asia, a region were most are happy to report sales, Chrysler registered the only drop compared to August 2009: 30 percent (1,042, from 2,024).

Hopes, however, remain low within the American manufacturer when it comes to the following months. Referring to the disastrous result reported in the US, the company's CEO, Sergio Marchionne, said the result are not so grim.

"September is not an indication of future performance, I'm not apologizing for it, it is the consequence of a number of actions that were taken in the past, all of which have culminated in the month of September - you may see similar numbers in October, I don't know," Marchionne said.
