Chrysler Group has announced that the second shift of workers hired to build the 2014 Jeep Cherokee at its Toledo plant have been temporarily laid off because crossovers already produced have yet to be delivered to Jeep dealers.
The layoff, which includes about 500 workers, while 600 others have been reassigned, is expected to last about two weeks. 9,430 brand new Jeep Cherokees have been built by the end of August, but none of them have reached US dealerships.

"We have been producing vehicles since the end of June and have now built the critical number of vehicles we need to stock dealerships once containment is released," Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson told Automotive News. “We will temporarily idle the second shift so as not to put additional strain on our logistics partners to get these vehicles into the hands of customers as quickly and efficiently as possible upon release,” she added.

Production of the 2014 Cherokee began in late June and the first vehicles should have been released in mid-August. However, Chrysler postponed the launch, claiming that the Cherokee needed a software fix before reaching its customers.
