The modern-day incarnation of the iconic Lada Niva offroader, the Chevrolet Niva, is about to go through a complex transformation. We’ve already shown you two sets of teaser images and now the first photos of the concept have leaked online.
The pictures were published in the latest issue of the Russian Autoreview magazine, as motor.ru writes. The timing seems just right, as the Chevrolet Niva is scheduled to debut in concept form at the Moscow International Motor Show, which kicks off tomorrow.
It seems that the Chevrolet Niva, which is produced by a joint venture between GM and AvtoVaz (the maker of the original Niva, which still lives on), will grow in size. The SUV will gain 260 mm (10.2 inches) in length, reaching an overall value of 4,316 mm (170 inches).
While the rear dependent suspension remains in place, albeit with a set of updates expected, up front we’ll see a set of tweaked MacPherson struts. Permanent all-wheel drive is present, with a lockable center differential and a transfer case featuring two-stage reduction gear.
In the engine compartment, the Opel-sourced 1.8-liter naturally-aspirated engine of the current model will be replaced by a Peugeot engine. The powerplant, also a NA 1.8-liter, produces 135 hp and is matted to a five-speed manual (the ougoing Niva features an Aisin five-speed manual).
Once the car hits the market, Chevrolet will launch multiple powertrain configurations, including front-wheel drive and automatic versions. However, the higher costs required by the development of a diesel incarnations mean this will not see the light of day.
Like we said in the previous reports, the concept has a strong offroading aura. The vehicle rides on 16-inch wheels shod in rugged terrain tires that come in a size of 235/70 R16. These come to complement the air intake snorkel and the roof rack that holds a spare wheel and a set of extra lights. Light cluster protection elements are also present.
While many of the extreme visual element will get lost on the way to series production, expect the final version to keep the rugged overall appearance.
