The rise of the SUVs didn't spare any segment, but none was so heavily hit as station wagons. Once the quintessential family car, the wagon fell prey to the public's sudden urge for taller, seemingly more robust vehicles.
Based on their vehicle preferences, you'd think either more and more people lived on a farm in the countryside or the quality of the roads had gone down throughout the country. How else can you explain this affinity for vehicles with higher ground clearance and, generally speaking, all-wheel-drive?

You can't, but it is what it is, and it'll take time - or something really special - to change it now. Is this Chevrolet Caravan rendering special enough? Sadly, it probably isn't, but not through a fault of its own. It's just that one single wagon model can't fight with the dozens of SUVs on its own, regardless of how cool it may look.

The design belongs to Giordano Vittorini and is the product of his internship at GM back in 2016. With 2020 being as it was, it gave Giordano plenty of time to go through his work and come up with a 3D model of his gorgeous wagon, for which he used a metallic beetle finish combined with the good old black for maximum effect.

His source of inspiration was the Chevrolet Opala Caravan, particularly the SS version. The Opala was a GM model sold in Brazil that used the European Opel Rekord as a starting base but received its powertrains from GM North America. As for the designer’s goal, that would be "to bring the passion of a classic car to a modern concept."

There isn't much not to like about Giordano's Chevrolet Caravan as it mixes the muscly details of a Camaro with the practicality of a station wagon and a fresh new face we wouldn't mind seeing on other models of the brand as well.

For way too long, wagons have been a styling compromise. Designers would come up with the appearance of the sedan and then begin to put together its corresponding wagon version. The two-volume model was just a necessary evil (until it wasn't anymore as manufacturers seem to forget about offering a wagon as well more and more often).

Well, Giordano has turned the table with this rendering because even though a sedan or a coupe based on it would definitely look great, it probably wouldn't have the same presence as the Caravan. That's a great accomplishment for Giordano, no question about it, but even more importantly, it's a victory for station wagons.
