Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Production Begins

General Motors has officially begun production of the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible at its production facilities in Oshawa, Canada. The rag-top version of Chevy’s pony car will go on sale in the US by the end of February and should be available with two engine options.

The four-seater model comes with a power-folding soft-top that retracts in about 20 seconds and folds under a one-piece tonneau cover. We all know that the one big drawback with convertibles is rigidity, so the company’s engineers were quick to reassure us that the car comes with some structural changes that give it "superior bending and torsional stiffness than its closest competitor".

As with the coupe version, power comes from either the Pentastar V6 or a big V8 powerplant. There are also four trim packages available, while prices start at just $30,000.
Both entry-level models, the 1LT (US$30,000) and 2LT (US$33,500), are offered with a 3.6-liter direct injection V6 motor rated at 312 horsepower and 278 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. The mill can be mated to either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an optional six-speed automatic transmission.

If you are looking for a bit more power, you can have your Camaro equipped with a choice of two 6.2-liter V8 powertrains, the L99 with 400 hp that is coupled to an automatic transmission, or the LS3 with 426 hp on manual-equipped models.

General Motors of Canada's headquarters in Oshawa, Ontario, employs 9,000 people. GMCL manufactures vehicles, powertrains, and markets the full range of General Motors vehicles and related services through dealerships and retailers across Canada.
