Porsche might design a lower cost model in the near future that will be offered with a price tag below the one of the Boxster, company officials said. Wolfgang Duerheimer, head of development, said in a statement for Automobilwoche magazine that the recently-formed alliance with Volkswagen would reduce the overall costs of developing a cheaper model. He described such a car as a "priority".
Additionally, chief executive Michael Macht told Welt am Sonntag hinted that Porsche wants to sell 150,000 cars per year in the future but strongly emphasized that new models are mandatory for this to become possible.
"If the world economy picks up again we can well imagine unit sales of 150,000 Porsche cars per year," he said. "But we won't achieve this with the four models that are existing today. Otherwise, we would have to significantly increase the number of cars of the current models. And then we would not be exclusive anymore. Therefore we have to think about new vehicles."
Other rumors are pointing to an electric Porsche sports car that would better comply with the current market conditions. Michael Macht has already hinted that the German brand could step towards electric models and emphasized that he is "convinced that one day Porsche will have an electric sports car in its line-up."
Separately, Volkswagen is believed to use the Panamera platform for other brands and develop new models that will be offered with a lower price tag than the Porsche. Up until now, there's no confirmation regarding such a project but the Panamera platform could be very well used on Bentleys, Bugattis or even Audis.
