The days when you discuss purchasing a new car with a human being might soon become history, as new-generation technology aims to replace labor-intensive human operations with artificial intelligence.
Impel, a company whose main focus has been integrating AI applications into the automotive industry, recently announced an automated conversational agent powered entirely by generative AI.

While this might sound like rocket science for less tech-savvy people, Impel's new system is essentially a chat powered by ChatGPT-like technology. Its role is to connect the main dealership operations and get in touch with customers to replace the most boring things sales agents typically had to do: get in touch with customers to provide details about certain vehicles, features, and availability.

Chatbots have been around for some time in the automotive industry, but generative AI allows Impel's new technology to integrate with several dealership operations, including sales and service. Using full access to the AI-powered communication suite developed by the company, Chat AI can resolve customer inquiries without involving any human staff.

Here's precisely how the whole thing would work.

Let's suppose you want to buy a new Silverado and go to the website of a nearby Chevrolet dealership. If you need more information about the truck or are curious to find out if the vehicle is in stock, you can initiate a conversation with a sales agent. Impel's technology handles the whole process to answer all your questions, including availability, dealer-approved pricing, and so on.

The chatbot can also include videos and links to detail certain features, but at the same time, also offer suggestions based on your criteria. Assuming the Silverado version you wanted is unavailable or the waiting time is too long, Chat AI can look for similar configurations in the same price range and provide comparisons, video walkarounds, and additional details to help you make an informed decision.

In other words, the conversational AI engine replaces an online sales agent, allowing you to quickly find a vehicle without involving human staff. When you're ready, the chatbot can schedule a test drive appointment based on the available schedule, with the information then automatically forwarded to the team in charge of test drives at the dealership.

Chat AI is an incredibly advanced piece of technology, and Impel says it can be further integrated into a dealership's operations as long as the rest of the suite is available. For example, the consumer interaction and the provided details are saved in the CRM system, so sales teams receive notifications based on your discussion with the chatbot.

A video demonstration of Chat AI is available below, so the next time you interact with a sales agent online, don't be too surprised if the conversation goes much smoother than it typically does (because, you know, human responses aren't always spot on).
