Canada Testing Insurance Rates Based on Bike Speed Telemetry

Canada Testing Insurance Rates Based on Bike Speed Telemetry 1 photo
This news is a bit controversial and it might spring up some pretty rough discussions: Canadian province Saskatchewan Government Insurance is testing a new way to calibrate insurance rates for motorcycle riders.
Based on a group of volunteers, this test uses data acquired from the bike itself by special telematics technology recording speed, distance, braking and location. Long story short, if you crash while speeding, you're in big trouble as compensations might decrease and the new insurance rate will definitely be bigger, as you're a troublemaker and an irresponsible rider.

The Saskatchewan Government Insurance says that the final goal of this endeavor is to add equity to the insurance rates so that riders who “behave” will pay less than those not that fond of driving responsibly. Leaving the “Big Brother” arguments aside, we could see some point in all this.

However, the biggest problem is that the insurance companies are never actually making any SERIOUS rebates for those who behave, and the rates are constantly going up for everybody. And this is not happening only in Canada, but all over the globe.

It some sort of saying ”hey, you should be glad you're paying a tad less than the other guy… even though we raised both your rates a bit, for no apparent reason other than some financial mumbo-jumbo crap.” We'd like to hear your opinion on this, really.
