Once the Cadillac CTS-V was unveiled earlier this year, there was a noticeable gasp heard from the ranks of the BMW M5 and E63 AMG owners. Maybe they played it cool at first but the numbers the Caddy is showing are to be reckoned with.
The hardcore V-Series model is just 10 HP less powerful than the meanest engine GM has ever made, namely the one inside the Corvette Z06. That means it can rely on 640 HP out of the 6.2-liter V8 block, and it will blow out of the water its German competition, at least in a straight line.
On top of that, we also have the ATS-V model that is also pretty ambitious and wants a bit of the M3 and C63 AMG market. In this case, the Europeans can breathe a little easier, as there are more factors at play.
Even so, the increasing attention offered to V-Series models is noticeable. That’s also the opinion of David Leone, the Cadillac Chief Engineer that had a sit down with The Detroit Bureau earlier this week. During that meeting, he said that his company wants to offer more such versions in the near future.
Of course, he wasn’t speaking of cars that wouldn’t make sense in such guises, like the Escalade or the SRX for example but he did mention that GM’s luxury brand wants to launch up to eight new models until the end of the decade. Five of them would get the V treatment.
That will include a smaller car, pitted under the ATS range that would run against the A3 Sedan, CLA-Class from Mercedes and a future 1 Series Sedan from BMW. If they will keep the rear-wheel-drive layout intact, it could give them serious reasons to worry.
On top of that, this model will surely get the V-Series treatment, using a small, turbocharged-into-oblivion engine that could have an output higher than the 360 HP of the M133 2-liter plant on the CLA45 AMG model. Yes, it does sound unusual for Cadillac but it could very well happen.
Other things they are currently looking at include a CT6-V model that would run against the S63 AMG and Audi S8 models as well as using electric motors for this range. Since the hypercars of today rely on electric help to go fast, why wouldn’t Cadillac do the same?
