Remember when Cadillac built proper luxury machines? It's no shame if you don't, but your old man would shiver with emotion if you tell him the following three words: Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. With only 400 cars built in 1957 and some 304 in 1958, this was the highest-priced American automobile of its era.
The car talking about today is a perfect example of what American auto luxury represented back in the 1950s, when the Brougham nameplate arrived with a big splash and far more flash than the Lincoln Continental Mark II. Its brushed stainless steel roof made it stand out from the crowd, while the wicked suicide doors would lock automatically when the vehicle was put in gear.

Exterior flamboyance continues with four headlights and massive stainless steel skirts that cover the lower rear fenders, along with slim tail lights incorporated in the achingly beautiful fins at the back. Under the aesthetic extravaganza, the Cadillac Eldorado Brougham sits on a rigid tubular X-type frame which worked wonders together with the air suspension. Wonder how much the four-door hardtop was priced back in its day? $13,074, which was twice the price of the normal Eldorado and more than the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.

But as spectacular as the exterior may be, it is beaten by the lavish cabin. Body number 442 we're talking about still has many of its original vanity accessories, including the first two-position memory power seats in the industry, automatic trunk opener, cruise control, automatic-release parking brake, silver magnetized glovebox with drink tumblers, cigarette and tissue dispensers and Arpege atomizer with Lanvin perfume.

In total, customers of the Brougham could opt between no less than 44 full leather interior and trim combinations, which included exotic offerings such as Mouton, Karakul and lambskin carpeting. Also original and in perfect working condition, this Brougham is equipped with the factory all-transistor signal-seeking radio unit built by General Motors' Delco Radio division. As for the punch, this car has plenty of it thanks to the 325 horsepower produced by its 365 c.i. (6-liter) V8 coupled to a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission.

To be auctioned on Saturday, July 26th, by RM Auctions at the Motor City sales event, this Deauville Gray 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham body number 442 is expected to fetch anything between $150,000 to $200,000.
