We’ve seen countless videos of this car, making us wonder if Cadillac really can pull off a rival for BMW’s 3-Series. Soon all answers will be answered, as the official debut date for the rear-wheel drive sedan is set for the beginning of the 2012 North American International Auto Show, taking place at the beginning of January.
ATS is a crucial part of Cadillac’s expansion,” GM Senior Vice President of Global Product Development Mary Barra told the Automotive Press Association on Friday. “ATS enters the biggest market segment in the global luxury car industry, both in terms of volume and importance. It’s a segment dominated by German cars, including the BMW 3-series, Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4, so we’ve developed a compelling and convincing new challenger.”
What’s more, it was announced production of the ATS sedan will get underway next summer at the Lansing, Michigan, Grand River Assembly plant.
As a 3-Series rival, the ATS must pack some very serious firepower under the bonnet, that’s both efficient and refined. Just like BMW is switching to smaller engines, the base ATS is believed to be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Ironically, there’s a good chance it will pack 270 horsepower or more, like in the Buick application, which is more than BMW’s 240 hp or so (market dependent).
While some rumors suggest the range-topping ATS-V sports sedan will have a 380 hp 3.0-liter V6, close analysis of video footage has lead us to believe it’s actually powered by a 6.2-liter direct-injected V8. This is said to be rated at 470 horsepower and 438 lb-ft of torque, which should provide some fantastic performance figures to take on the rumored 450 horsepower M3.
