Chinese carmaker BYD has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with British company Green Tomato Cars which will see the two offer the first fleet of all-electric taxis for London.
BYD will deliver 50 units of its E6 model to Green Tomato Cars, which will bring them to the streets of the British capital starting from the second quarter of next year. The E6 is powered by a 75 kW electric motor, which uses energy from a BYD iron phosphate battery. The setup allows the car to offer a range of 186 miles (299.5 km) and a top speed of 87 mph (140 km/h).
‘We are delighted to supply Green Tomato Cars with E6 vehicles… The e6 has zero tailpipe emissions, so it avoids contributing to the city’s CO2 levels, BYD chairman, Wang Chuanfu, said’.
‘‘It is my aim that London’s minicabs and taxis will be zero-emission my 2020… so it's great news that Green Tomato Cars has committed to operating 50 of these super-clean machines from next year,’’ London’s Mayor Boris Johnson said.
