Remember what London officials announced a while ago concerning their plan to make the city’s air cleaner? Well, it’s quite a big deal that they are building in steps. One of those legs concerns electrifying central London routes 507 and 521 as part of Transport for London’s drive to make all of its single deck buses emission-free by 2020. Here’s where China’s bus manufacturer comes in.
In the universe of car making, £19 million ($29.66 million) may not seem like such a big deal, but you should know China’s plans for the electric powered vehicles are quite big. Believe it or not, but the 51-bus fleet will be Europe’s biggest so far and that means something. The partnership BYD - the world’s largest pure electric bus maker - and Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) - Europe’s fastest growing bus and coach builder - closed was announced today.

The move follows confirmation by Go-Ahead London that they are to introduce 51 emission-free, pure electric buses on routes 507 and 521. While the Chinese are coming with the chassis and technology-leading electric drivetrain, ADL will body the vehicles incorporating their market-leading Enviro200-like midi bus design. In case you haven’t heard of it, we’ll mention that this model is the world’ best-selling midibus and renowned for its lightweight, easy access, maneuverability and fuel efficiency. At least that’s what they claim.

Further details on the cooperation can be consulted on the press release we listed below, but before that we’ll mention just a couple of further details. All 51 buses - which are capable of carrying up to 90 passengers each - are expected to take the road by August 2016. Moreover, the deal includes a full on-site repair and maintenance program for the term of the contract.
