A BYD eBus-12 all-electric city bus has just been given to the local transportation operator, in Brussels, Belgium. It will be tested for a period of two months, in order to see whether or not it could be feasibly used in the Belgian capital. BYD is also testing EV buses in Denmark, as we previously reported.
The bus itself has a total range of 250 km, so it would not have to be taken out of service too often, in order to charge it. Inside the bus, it has 27 seats, as well as an additional 4 folding seats which can be used when needed. It will not be used to actually carry passengers, and their weight will be simulated using some sort of ballast (sand bags, probably).

Brussels is committed to not buy diesel buses after 2015, so they need to find viable alternatives until then, and the eBus-12, if it stands up to the rigors of European public transport operators, will be just such an alternative. Furthermore, future BYD EV buses destined for Europe will be manufactured in the EU, in Bulgaria, where a new plant is being built.
