Button Says Ferrari Has Best Car Right Now

While the majority of the F1 drivers believe that the Red Bull RB7 will once again prove the car to beat through the 2011 Formula 1 season, 2009 champion Jenson Button has a different view on the matter.

Of course, taking into account the fact that different fuel loads and, more importantly, different Pirelli tire compounds can have a great impact on the running at least as far as testing is concerned, Button believes it is Ferrari who holds the edge on performance this season. According to Button, the Ferrari F150th Italia proved the fastest racer when it comes to long runs.

Do you really think the Ferrari is six tenths slower than the Red Bull?” asked rhetorically Button after the Saturday running in Barcelona, at the end of which Alonso was sitting 6 tenths of a second behind Sebastian Vettel in the timing reports.

And the Ferrari on the long runs seem to be two seconds quicker than everyone else,” he added, according to the BBC.

As Fernando Alonso and reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel commented in recent days, the testing in February brought little indication of how good a car's pace really is, and the first time one can really judge the performance of a challenger will be at the season opening Bahrain Grand Prix. However, Button still believes Ferrari have a small edge over their competitors.

It's very difficult to know the pace of people and what they're doing,” added Button. “What is interesting is people's consistency - that's when you can really see if they have a good car. Ferrari does look competitive in terms of consistency but so do a lot of others and the Red Bull looks pretty good but not as good as the Ferrari.”
