Button Insists Aussie Race Dangerous Due to Twilight Racing

Jenson Button was the first driver to again raise some safety issues ahead of the upcoming Australian Grand Prix, referring to the late starting hour of the Sunday race as being “dangerous” for the drivers. Just like last year, the Aussie GP will start at 5PM local time, while probably ending somewhere around 7PM (depending on the weather).

The race-start change happened for the first time last year, when Bernie Ecclestone moved the Sunday action later in order to give the European fans the chance to watch the race at a more accurate hour in the morning.

It can be dangerous if you've got the sun in your eyes and you can't see where you're going. But I'd rather be racing in the day, even a twilight race for me, I'd rather that than the night time. Out in front is probably not such a bad place to be (as the sun sets), so hopefully we can put ourselves in the same place and won't have to worry,” said Button.

The 30-year old Brit emerged as dominant winner of the 2009 Australian Grand Prix, at the end of which several drivers complained about the poor visibility experienced in the late stages of the race. Although the Australian organizers also urged Ecclestone to find a solution to the “twilight racing” issue, the scheduling for the event has remained intact until the 2010 event.

Further commenting on the upcoming race, Button admitted that he needs to up his game in the series, and the most realistic aim for himself and his team would be a podium finish.

I think it (the car) will suit this circuit better. It's a lower downforce circuit so we have to wait and see. A podium would be fantastic here. I think that has to be the aim. I think it's a possibility and you've got to set your sights pretty high,” added Button.
