Bugatti's Top Speed Record Threatened By Shelby

Bugatti recently claimed the land speed record for a production car, with the Super Sport version of the Veyron hypercar managing to reach no less than 268 mph (431 km/h).

The news has brought a wave of positive emotions to the automotive enthusiasts from all over the world (we threw a pretty wild party here at autoevolution). However, there is a certain entity that was anything but happy to receive the news. No, we are not talking about Greenpeace, but about Shelby Supercars, the American company that previously held the record.

Guess what? Shelby now threatens to take the record back. According to autocar, the U.S. automaker will launch a new model that is aimed at stealing Bugatti’s show.

We’ve been working on a new project to debut before the end of the summer. Not much can be said at this time except that we’ll be upping the ante on all fronts,” Shelby was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.

One of the assets that Shelby relies on is the design of the car, which will be signed by Jason Castriota.

We’ll remind you that back in 2007, Shelby’s SSC Ultimate Aero set a new record, reaching a top speed of 256.23 mph (412.28 km/h) on a 12 mile (19 km) stretch of road in Nevada. The record stood until Bugatti took the Veyron Super Sport to the 13 mile (21 km) VW Ehra-Lessien test track at the end of last month. The vehicle managed to climb up to 267.91 mph (431.072 km/h).

Our say: Shelby might not be able to deliver a vehicle that rivals with the Bugatti Veyron in terms of engineering genius, but figures will be figures.
