Brabus and Daimler go a long way back. The premier tuning outfit for all things Mercedes-Benz and smart prepared three world premieres for the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the most unapologetic of which is the sinister Brabus 900 One of Ten.
Based on the range-topping G-Class, the 900 One of Ten is described by its maker as the most powerful 12-cylinder off-road vehicle in the world. The twin-turbo V12 is the centerpiece, packing a mind-boggling 900 PS (888 horsepower) and 1,500 Nm (1,106 pound-feet) of tire-squealing torque. Thus, the performance will make some jaws drop. As a matter of fact, a lot of jaws.
Capable of hitting 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 3.9 seconds, the exclusive off-road bruiser is joined on stage in Frankfurt by the Rocket 900. The ultimate expression of the Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet boasts similar figures to the G65-derived 900 One of Ten, but with a twist. Sitting lower to the ground and with drive sent to the rear wheels, the Rocket 900 will hit 350 km/h (317 mph), thus becoming the fastest four-seat convertible in the world.
Tuning jobs are fine and all, but Brabus is more than meets the eye. Take the Ultimate E Concept as the perfect case in point. Developed in cooperation with Kreisel Electric, the project starts with a donor vehicle coming in the form of the smart fortwo Electric Drive. Packing 204 PS (201 horsepower) from an electric motor and a 22 kWh battery, this city car sprints to 100 km/h in less than five seconds, and on to a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph).
Tipping the scales at 1,085 kilograms (2,392 pounds), the Brabus Ultimate E Concept also looks the part thanks to the Widestar body kit and 18-inch wide tires. The interior, however, is a bit of a letdown. It’s not the blue leather that grinds my gears, but the cheapo audio system. The optional touchscreen infotainment system would’ve been more fitting in this application.
At the time of writing, Brabus' higher-ups haven't decided if the smart-derived Ultimate E Concept is worthy of being put into limited production.
