BMW will introduce the X4 in 2014, following the huge success of the X1, X3, X5 and X6. The vehicles were pioneers in each of their respective segments, and all sales went better than expected, according to Diess. He also made a reference to the MINI Countryman, which managed to increase its sales with almost 15 percent.

The investments made globally into the SUV segment will increase, especially in China, where the market is constantly growing.

Regarding pollution and CO2 emissions, the SUVs are known to be on the wrong side of the line. Diess said that the diesel engines that BMW currently produces are already recording extremely low CO2 emissions, even in the US market, where diesel engines are not very well perceived.

On the North American market, for example, almost 30% of the X5s sold are diesels. That says a lot about the way they are perceived, especially in the US.

Thinking long term, there is a definite probability that the BMW SUVs will also receive hybrid engines, said Diess.
