It’s no secret that the BMW M family will grow in the near future. Whereas the X1 M is a tough business case, the X3 M and X4 M will undoubtedly get the green light for mass production.
What our spy photographers have caught here is the BMW X3 M. Internally known as the F97, the high-performance model is based on the 2017 BMW X3, itself referred to as the G01. The front end is much more aggressive than that of a regular X3, revealing large air intakes, more flared wheel arches, and a lower stance.

At the rear, the signature M detail is represented by the four exhaust pipes. The headlights and taillights will not make it into production, though. For a clearer view of those, we recommend checking out this set of spy photos. The main competitors of the BMW X3 M come in the form of the soon-to-debut Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, Audi RS Q5, as well as the Porsche Macan Turbo.

According to a report published at the beginning of the year, the BMW X3 M will be animated by a six-cylinder engine with up to 500 horsepower on tap. The secret to that output comes courtesy of turbocharging, direct injection, and the water injection technology introduced by the BMW M4 GTS. In terms of cog-swapping, an automatic will have to do.

Thanks to the know-how BMW acquired in the past few years, the next-generation X3 and 3 Series will ride on an all-new platform christened CLAR. The acronym stands for CLuster ARchitecture and the name of the game here is weight saving. According to reports, the X3 is expected to shed up to 220 pounds (100 kilograms) over the current generation. The benefits of a lower curb weight are better handling, better fuel economy, and a reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide.

In related Bayerische Motoren Werke AG news, the BMW G02 X4 will be launched sometime in 2018 and it will be followed by the BMW F98 X4 M. The latter will share its oily bits with the BMW F97 X3 M.
