The German brand chose an M4 GTS as the candidate for the job of Safety Car in the famous DTM Championship. Along with the announcement, BMW published a photo gallery of the new Safety Car, which you can see in the dedicated section on this page.

BMW’s latest Safety Car is based on a stock M4 GTS, and it looks identical to the factory model. However, it does get a few extra highlights, like an LED light bar and a full set of stickers to tell everyone it is the official DTM Safety Car.

Optional extras include a front splitter, a fixed rear wing, and a combination of 19-inch alloy wheels on the front and 20-inch rims on the rear, both with Orange accents.

Converting the stock M4 GTS into the DTM Safety Car was not much of a hassle, as the model comes stock with a roll bar and a fire extinguisher. All BMW had to do to make this vehicle eligible for its new job was to fit a radio system, used by race officials to communicate important info during different phases of the competition.

The BMW M4 used to be the Safety Car for the MotoGP Championship, but it has been replaced by the M2 Coupe. Either way, race fans will get to see these models often if they are avid supporters of the two branches of motorsport. BMW’s Motorcycle division, BMW Motorrad, also has an Official Safety Bike, based on the S1000 RR.

Concerning powertrains, the M4 GTS’s unit was not changed at all for this season’s DTM Championship. Like in the previous season, BMW’s M4 Safety Car will shortly reunite with the BMW M4 DTM on the starting grid during this year’s DTM Season. The latter is far from stock, and shares only a few parts with the stock model.
