The BMW X3 is preparing to get its third generation, and rumors about an eventual M version have reappeared.
This time, the upcoming X3’s M version is rumored to feature a turbocharged direct-injected gasoline engine that develops 500 HP, the Germans at Focus inform. The unit is a six-cylinder and it even features BMW’s new water injection technology to help increase boost without knocking and reduce real world fuel consumption.

Unlike the current generation of the X3, the possible M version of the upcoming generation of BMW’s SUV would have a competitor in Audi’s offering. Therefore, the existence of a competitor in the performance SUV segment could make the people at BMW release their performance version of the X3.

We already know the car will receive a larger body and will be launched by the beginning of 2017. If the M version gets the green light, the performance version of the X3 could come to market by the end of next year.

Thanks to significant improvements in the body and platform, the X3 could lose about 100 kilograms (220 pounds), so the potential performance version could be a compelling proposition in the segment.

BMW would achieve the weight drop on the future X3 by using components from the upcoming 3 Series. On its own, the 3 Series is set for a diet using high-strength alloys and even carbon fiber components for the standard versions.

Since the X3 would be lent some of these components, the SUV will benefit from the new developments and lose weight.

We expect to receive more spy shots of prototypes of the standard car in the coming months, and next year we might see the prototype of the performance version testing in the wild, if it receives the green light.

BMW’s potential X3 M is still unconfirmed and will probably remain so until its launch date approaches.
