There's been a lot of talk lately about the new models and updates BMW will launch in July but most people didn't see one thing coming: BMW's fastest 3 Series will be a diesel starting with the 7th month of this year.
How come is this possible? Well, the recent announcement of the new Audi A4's engines put the BMW engineers in a tight spot. The top of the line diesel engine from Audi is going to be a 3-liter V6 TDI unit with 272 HP. That is more than the current BMW 330d with 258 HP and 6 inline cylinders.

That being said, BMW had to come up with another model, to destroy the new A4. And destroy they did. They announced the release of the 335d model, starting with this summer.

This car will take over the 'fastest 3 series' badge from the 335i model. It will be powered by a 313 HP engine that has almost the same amount of torque as the current M5 (630 Nm vs 680 Nm or 465 lb-ft vs 501 lb-ft). Given the fact that the diesel car has 7 extra HP it will also be the most powerful 3er until the launch of the M3.

Going over the numbers, let's have a look at the acceleration times too, shall we? The 335i xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5 seconds, whilst the 335d xDrive model will do it 0.2 seconds faster.

The top speeds are the same (due to electronic limiters) but another major difference is the fuel consumption figure. Whilst the 335i xDrive will do around 31 mpg (7.6 l/100km) in a combined cycle, the diesel 3er will return 43 mpg (5.4 l/100km).

Given these facts, we can't wait to test the new car and see how the future A4 will hold its own against it. To get a better understanding of just how fast this car will be, remember that the E46 M3 reached the 100 km/h (62 mph) benchmark speed in 5.1 seconds.
