We've already talked about the new M140i and M240i. Likewise, we've detailed the 750d's quad-turbo engine coming this summer. However, BMW has announced several smaller updates for the range that take effect in July 2016.
To start things off, the 1 Series and 2 Series are going to receive several versions of a new 2-liter turbocharged (gasoline) engine. These units will be available with manual or auto gearboxes across all four body styles (3-door, hatch, coupe and convertible).

The first is a 2.0L for the 120i and 220i. In both cases, its output is raised by 7 hp/5 kW to 184 hp. Both manual or auto versions of the 1 Series now take 7.1 seconds to reach 100 km/h, making them as fast as the new Renault Megane GT.

The 2 Series 220i model is just as fast when it's a coupe, but the convertible is sluggish, taking 7.5 seconds with a stick and 7.7s when equipped with the 8-speed.

July will mark the launch of several iPerformance plug-in hybrid models that we already know about. The most important is the 740e, which mixes a 2-liter engine with electricity to give you 326 hp, a 0 to 100 time of 5.4 seconds, and up to 48 km of EV range.

There's no reason you should stop at just 184 hp, especially when BMW offers more. In the case of the hatchback, it comes in the form of the 125i, which makes 224 hp, also 7 hp more than before. This model comes standard with the ZF automatic and gets to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds.

July will see the launch of the 230i. No, it doesn't come with a 3-liter engine, as the name would suggest. Instead, this gets a better tune on the engine we've been talking about so far. It produces 252 hp, 7 more than the predecessor model (the 228i).

The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is completed by the BMW 230i Coupe in 5.8 seconds (automatic: 5.6 seconds). It's just model branding stuff, by the 225xe Active Tourer, the X5 xDrive40e and 330e will all be re-branded as iPerformance models. Why? Because the technology from the i8 and i3 is helping BMW become greener.

In addition to the “eDrive” logo on the C-pillar, the BMW iPerformance models will feature a BMW i logo on the front left and right sidewalls, blue hubcaps and a BMW kidney grill with slats painted in typical BMW i blue. All this will be changed in July, excluding the X5, which will have these features in December.
