Just over 5,760 examples of the 2014 to 2015 model year BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, and 4 Series have been recalled in the US market. According to BMW of North America, these cars have been assembled with head airbag inflators that may rupture.
The iffy head airbag inflators bear part numbers 7239399, 7239400, 7311201, 7311202, 7390327, and 7390328. Produced by Autoliv Steering Wheels Mexico, said assemblies may corrode, resulting in a failure at the weld joint. Partial inflation in the event of a crash is one thing, but the biggest safety risk posed by these inflators is separation at the joint.
Documents filed with the federal watchdog reveal that rapid separation could result in injury or fatality to the occupants and to persons near the vehicle. The supplier informed BMW of North America about the aforementioned condition on April 12, 2024.
Even though BMW's North American division isn’t aware of any reports, complaints, or warranty claims related to the described issue, no fewer than 5,761 vehicles will have their head airbag inflators replaced out of an abundance of caution. The 2014 to 2015 model year BMW 2 Series Coupe opens the list with 195 units, split between the rear-drive 228i, the all-wheel-drive 228i xDrive, and the M235i.
The 2014 to 2015 BMW 3 Series Sedan makes up the largest portion of the recall population, namely 4,045 gas vehicles (including the F80-generation M3) plus 260 diesel vehicles. On that note, BMW discontinued turbo diesels in the US of A for 2019. In the final instance, North American diesels from BMW comprised the 328d, 540d, and X5 35d.
Moving on, the 2014 – 2015 BMW 4 Series Coupe and 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe round off the recall population. They're listed with 1,088 and 173 units, respectively, in the following versions: 428i, 428i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive, and M4. Production dates range from November 26, 2013, to September 4, 2014. Because it's nigh-on impossible to determine when your Bimmer has been produced, you're better off running the 17-character VIN on the automaker's website or the NHTSA's website.
In case your vehicle is included in this recall, do contact your dealer of choice as soon as possible. Dealers nationwide have already been instructed to replace the head airbags at no charge whatsoever to affected customers. Owner notification letters, meanwhile, will be mailed around June 14, 2024.
Not to be confused with the front-biased 2 Series Gran Coupe, the 2 Series Coupe was designated F22 through 2021 when the G42 rolled out. The Munich-based automaker doesn't offer a drop-top version of the second-generation 2 Series Coupe, and nobody knows for certain if the G43 will ever materialize.
At press time, the 2 Series Coupe starts at $38,800 as opposed to $38,400 for the 2 Series Gran Coupe. The 3er is $44,500 from the outset, whereas the 4 Series Coupe and 4 Series Gran Coupe start at $50,700 and $48,300 for the four-cylinder 430i.
