BMW Motorrad USA has issued a voluntary recalls for at least 4453 motorcycles and maxi scooters. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has started the recall campaign number 14V065000, which will start in April 2014.
The affected vehicles belong to many model series, but all are 2013 model years. For the exact manufacture date of the affected bikes, please check the list after the jump. 2013model year C600 Sport and C650GT maxi scooters, F700GS, F800GS, F800GS Adventure, F800GT, R1200R and R1200GS motorcycles are likely to develop the issue described below.

Due to an incorrectly-manufactured side-stand switch housing, water may enter the switch when vigorously washing the bikes or when riding in very wet conditions, and cause it to malfunction. This in turn, can prevent the engine from starting and in rare cases, could also cause the engine to shut off without warning while riding. Needless to say that an engine which goes dead when passing or through a turn is a major crash hazard.

BMW is notifying registered users and a free repair will be scheduled at the authorized dealers, where a new switch will be installed. If you’re not sure if your Beemer needs this fix, you can always get in touch with your nearest BMW dealer or contact the manufacturer at 1-800-831-1117.
