Tinted helmet visors have been around for quite some time now, and variable-tint ones are not exactly new, either. Convenient and very easy to use, such visors and visor inserts add more comfort to daily riding and can really make life better. So here’s the Akari AX-11, an on-demand visor insert offered at a truly neat price.
Akari AX-11 is based on e-Tint, a patented LCD film which alters its transparency according to a command issued by the rider. As stated above, this idea is not new, and similar devices, such as the Raleri sun-sensing visor or the Optical Shutter Dimming Helmet created by Hamid Saadat have been around for years.

The Akari AX-11 technically puts the rider in control of how much light passes through the lens insert and even if the system needs human action, it’s still extremely convenient, because motorcyclists can choose when their world is “getting dark”. Many riders, among which I must count myself, are having specific issues with light. That is, certain types of light are still bothering the sight, even though most other guys won’t feel the need for sunglasses.

For example, this happens with overcast skies though which diffuse light still passes, and in such conditions, I would still wear shades. Or lower the sun visor. Or activate the Akari AX-11, if I had one.

Installation is extremely easy, as the Akari AX-11 comes as a self-adhesive gimmick, with riders only having to make sure that the visor is clean and dry. The video below shows exactly how easy is to install this insert on pretty much any helmet. Unlike the Raleri system which is powered by a solar cell, the Akari AX-11 needs current from the small rechargeable battery attached on the outer surface of the helmet visor.

Conveniently rechargeable via USB, the small battery pack is said to last for 20 hours and this is anyway far more than anyone rides in one stint. In case of any malfunction, the Akari AX-11 returns to clear automatically, and it also comes with a dual-lens with permanent anti-fog coating and UV-protection.

The Akari AX-11 is $149.99 (€108) and this price is in the ballpark of what one pays on some bike maker-branded sun glasses.
