BMW Readying Sub-Z4 Roadster Concept for Geneva

In recent years, BMW’s main focus has been (rather disappointingly) its range of crossovers and sports utility vehicles. It all started with the introduction of a new 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 on the X5 M and X6 M, instead of the M5 sports sedan. More recently, the company introduced a new four-cylinder mill that replaces the traditional 3.0-liter straight-six on the X3, with plans to introduce on the Z4 at a later date. However, the Bavarian carmaker could be returning to its roots, with the introduction of a sub-Z4 competitor to the Mazda MX5. According to The Age, a new sportscar could be ready in time for a Geneva reveal. A representative from BMW supposedly confirmed that a baby drop-top will be the company's star attraction in Geneva this year. The good news is that it will have a wind-in-your-hair open-top configuration, the bad news is that we don’t know if it will be front or rear-wheel drive. If the car, rumored to be called the Z2, makes it to production, it will allow the Bavarians to take the fight to Volkswagen Group’s army of upcoming models that will arrive sporting VW, Porsche and Audi badges. The concept is not really meant as a production-oriented model, but some elements could show up in future products down the line. The Age is reporting that the concept could make use of some outlandish cues, including the retractable doors of the old Z1. autoevolution will be attending the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
