The upcoming UKL-platform based MINI models will definitely spike up the sales. After a terrific rise in sales in China over the last 3 years, the Asian country became the fourth largest for MINI in the world.
Together with future prospects, things are looking up for the British brand in the communist country. According to Autocar, BMW is currently pondering opening a new plant for these models only in joint venture at the Tiexi plant in Shenyang.
According to local sources, BMW already allocated space at Tiexi for the new assembly lines and an expansion in production along with a new paintshop, things needed for more than current production levels.
The reasons behind this decision are clear: it's cheaper to build cars in China, they will be delivered faster and sales are supposed to grow. Whether the cars built here will be sold exclusively to China or worldwide we're not sure yet.
At the moment, BMW in manufacturing MINIs at the Oxford plant in the UK, under contract at Magna (Austria) and will start production in the Netherlands, later this year.
