You may remember that a while back we posted an article in which it was detailed how a BMW can be stolen with relative ease, by accessing the car’s OBD II port, and programming in a blank key. The thefts reportedly only took place in the UK, so now BMW’s UK branch are offering owners a solution for the problem, free of charge.
The problem affects cars build between September 2007 and 2011, and these are exactly the cars BMW hopes to get back to the garage to apply the fix. It consists of a simple software upgrade which completely eliminates the risk. Currently, the fix is only available on the X5 and X6, yet it will become available for the rest of the range of affected car in about 8 weeks-time.
BMW recommend that owners should park their cars in secure locations, the official statement being: “Whereever possible park your car out of sight, in a locked garage or under the cover of CCTV cameras.”
