This weekend, BMW USA came out with a surprising announcement that they will be unveiling two concepts for the first time at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance. Being taken in with a lot of enthusiasm by the community, the question that lingered in everyone’s mind was which models would be the lucky ones.
Back when we reported about it, we told you that there’s a really slim chance that the M2 would be amongst them. It seems we were right as Autocar reports that one of their sources is pointing at the M4 GTS and 3.0 CSL Hommage concepts. However, there’s a problem in their story.

The BMW M4 GTS was already presented as a concept car in the shape of the 2015 MotoGP Safety Car. That car was fitted with the water injection system for the engine that was so highly praised before even coming out.

Furthermore, it was also equipped with all of the M Performance parts you can think of, including the rear wing for the boot lid. Basically, that’s the M4 GTS and all we’re lacking right now are the specs and a price tag.

Then there’s the 3.0 CSL Hommage. This could, indeed be presented at Pebble Beach too but, once again, it wouldn’t be a premiere as the car was shown in the metal at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, earlier this year.

According to Autocar, the concept that will be shown will be an evolution of what was presented in Italy but we have no idea what they mean by that. Either way, this info seems shady, to say the least.

That’s because, in the same article, the guys claim that the engine on the M4 GTS will be made available on all M3 and M4 models next year as part of a facelift. That makes absolutely no sense.

Not only because M cars traditionally don’t get technical facelifts but also because GTS cars are usually built in limited numbers to make them more attractive. They often are made with a generous amount of improvements that are not limited to the engine bay.

And would be the point of offering that bespoke mill on the GTS if all other customers will have access to it on the regular cars starting with next July?

No, the M4 GTS will probably be built in a couple of hundred units and the technology used for its engine will eventually trickle down to other models to help efficiency and performance figures but the facelifted M4 will not have it.
