BMW is the quintessentially German automobile company. Their engineers are constantly working on a new model, either improving it through refreshes or new engines or making something completely new.
The M4 is that kind of completely new BMW. When the original M3 came out all those years ago, it set the benchmark as the performance compact for the businessman who wanted to have fun. Although it was technically called a saloon, the a two-door and that's the way things stayed until they launched the outgoing E90 M3 sedan. Now though, there won't be an M3 sedan, since the M4 will replace it. M division engineers decided to go back to the drawing board with this one and despite being wider and longer than the E92, this M4 will be lighter and will now be powered by an inline-6, not a V8.
BMW is also testing a new X5 M model for 2014. Here, it's more of a case of evolution, not revolution. The engine used by the new super-SUV will likely still be a twin-turbo V8, but the company needs to work on response, economy and of course power as well.
