BMW debuts the “Intelligent Emergency Call” for motorcycles in Germany from 2017. The IEC is a safety-focused optional feature for the Bavarian bikes that will permit riders to call and get help at the site of a crash more quickly and with more accurate localization.
The “Intelligent Emergency Call” includes an array of sensors, cellular communication, a microphone, a loudspeaker, and an SOS button. The entire system will be fairly easy to retrofit to most models and is intended to be operational in other EU countries as well.
K1600GT is the first BMW model that incorporated an eCall system, since 2011, and the “Intelligent Emergency Call” is a development of that initial feature, now integrating the most modern technologies available.
Thanks to the cellular communication module installed on the bike, the system can contact the BMW Call Center in the case of a crash or bad fall. The system is triggered automatically if the lean angle sensor and the accelerometer detect a crash or dangerous fall scenario, and complex info is relayed to the BMW Call Center, including the GPS localization data and the direction of travel.
In case of minor crashes that do not require emergency response, the rider can cancel the call with a press of a button. The trigger occurs 25 seconds after the event, and in case medical help is not needed on site, the rider can cancel the procedure before the system sends the actual distress message to the Call Center.
Riders making use of the “Intelligent Emergency Call” will be able to communicate in their native language, thus increasing the efficiency of the entire process, regardless of whether the emergency call was initiated manually or automatically.
Riders need not fear that the eCall will be triggered out of the blue because the computer controlling the entire system knows how to recognize non-crashes from all the events. "The emergency call is not triggered automatically in non-emergency situations (e.g. if the bike falls over in a stationary position or in accidents at low speeds with no other traffic user involved, a shock to the bike when riding over a pothole or while off-road riding (e.g. small jumps or riding over obstructions). Sensors on the motorcycle detect which event occurred. A crash sensor detects events such as collisions with another vehicle or crashing into an obstruction. A banking angle sensor detects high and low-siders, i.e. which position the motorcycle is in," BMW declares.
So far, we only know this system will debut in Germany next year, most likely on the K1600GT models, but more info is expected from BMW Motorrad later this year.

The bike must be stationary and with the ignition on before the rider can press the SOS button.
