Although it was launched several years since its inception as the Project i, the new sub-brand announced by BMW in the beginning of the week still hasn't found for itself an exact position within the group.
At least, this is what can be deduced if we are to judge by the latest pieces of information coming from Germany, through various sources. Announced as breed of electric vehicles, the i sub-brand might end up including all types of efficient engines and power trains (meaning hybrids and diesels as well) and all sorts of BMW vehicles (read motorcycles and scooters).
According to Autocar, citing BMW insiders, Ian Robertson said that the i sub-brand would be a perfect fit for everything that will be fuel efficient in the future. i would become, if you like, the car maker's green division.
The obvious question that arises is what will happen to the BMW brand, given the fact that all of its vehicles are becoming more and more efficient. Or, for that matter, how would BMW set apart an i worthy car from a regular one?
As the word goes, nothing is yet settled at the BMW headquarters. i started out as a great idea and as perhaps the single division of an auto maker dedicated to producing electric vehicles. Two models will be launched in the near future under the name, the i3 and the i8, the former until recently known as the Megacity vehicle and the latter based on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept. What will happen after that hasn't probably been settled by the German premium car maker.
