BMW Launches i

The moment of truth for German auto maker has arrived, as its commitment to the electric vehicle sector became reality today. As promised for weeks, BMW announced today the launch of the i sub-brand, a range which, at first, will comprise two models, the i3 (former Megacity) and i8 (based on the Vision EfficientDynamics).

“BMW i represents a new movement in premium mobility. With the introduction of this new sub-brand, the BMW Group reaffirms its leadership as the most innovative and sustainable premium car company,”
said Ian Robertson, BMW member of the board for Sales and Marketing.

“The products and services have been conceived around a revolutionary approach: purpose designed and purpose built for sustainable, premium mobility. It’s a new day in our industry; a new era for individual mobility. This is BMW i - Born Electric.”

To handle all the business of the BMW i brand, which in the coming years is expected to take off like NASA missions in the space exploration golden era, the auto maker has established a new joint venture, BMW i Ventures, in New York. The company has a working capital of $100 million and will handle the expansion of the mobility services offered by i, including the two new models.

“Both cars have been designed specifically for their respective alternative drive systems. We used the innovative architecture and CFRP to cancel out practically all of the extra weight added by the batteries,” added Klaus Draeger, BMW Board member responsible for development.

“For our customers this means superior driving dynamics combined with significantly increased range using electric power.”

The new range of vehicles, the new brand as well as the plans the auto maker has for them all will continue to be detailed over the coming days.
