Autonomous cars seem to be the next important milestone in the auto industry and cracking that nut open will be a feat hard to achieve. However, the process is happening slowly but surely and everyone’s part of it, some without even knowing.
You like the active cruise control from BMW with stop and go function, right? And you also like the lane departure warning function as well as the traffic jam assistant, huh? Well, would you be surprised to learn that they are part of a bigger scheme that will eventually allow cars to drive themselves? Probably not.

According to a reliable source inside Munich, the Germans are working hard at bringing out even more such driving assistant features. The new 7 Series will be able to drive itself on the highway but that’s only one model and even on the flagship, those features are rather limited. Well, in the future we’ll get even more assistance.

Our source says that the engineers are working on systems that will inform the driver about the possibility of overtaking, alert him when he needs to give way or tell him who has priority in a busy intersection. Furthermore, pedestrian safety is discussed a lot these days and BMWs will get a feature that warns them about pedestrians around the car, including the rear.

Sounds interesting, right? Well, it is but that’s not all. Some time ago BMW said that iDrive will remain their choice regarding the infotainment options and dismissed rumors about working with Apple to add CarPlay to their cars, remember? It seems like someone had a change of heart, and we might get the system on Bavarians machines after all.

Since the Germans are known for the attention they’re paying to iPhone users, offering support for their smartphones more than for any other platform, it only makes sense to take another step towards integrating them into the cars.
