We should probably point out from the beginning that the following review might not make too much sense, from what the guys from Autobild are saying. We'll try to make some valid points though.
First of all, it's the Mk6 GTI that goes against the BMW and not the Mk7 but we'll still take a look at what these two can do. After watching the review you might be a bit confused but that's understandable as the review is quite weird.
It might be due to the translation but we think it's mostly because they simply don't know what they are talking about. Sure, the GTI has long years of tradition behind it and we respect that but the numbers speak for themselves.
The 125i has a 2-liter turbocharged engine that develops 218 HP and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque, is hooked up to an automatic 8-speed gearbox and returns a fuel consumption of 37 mpg (6.4 l/100 km). Before we forget, the 0-62 mph time is 6.2 seconds.
The GTI also has a 2-liter turbocharged engine under the bonnet, with 211 HP and 281 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque and is hooked up to the legendary DSG transmission. The average fuel consumption of the VW is 31.8 mpg (7.4 l/100km) and it does 62 mph in 6.9 seconds.
That being said, the BMW is more powerful, faster and more fuel efficient. Moving on, we'll find out that it's also a better family car, with more luggage space, being outpaced by the GTI only with the rear seats folded (in which case it's not a family car anymore, now is it?).
Talking about maneuverability and agility, the BMW wins again, with its rear-wheel drive and superior torque, leaving the GTI behind on this category too.
Despite all those advantages, the Autobild folks claim the GTI still wins because it's a bit cheaper. Well folks, there you have it! A bit of extra space (with the rear seats down) and a couple of dollars make the GTI better than the 125i. We don't think so!
